* My absolute favorite Thanksgiving tradition has been going on for years. I believe it is such a wonderful Thanksgiving tradition that I will be sure to pass on to my children. Each year my family gathers at my grandparents house for Thanksgiving dinner. It is a potluck type dinner where everyone contributes something, whether it be a main dish or a dessert. Before dinner we gather around the table hold hands and a prayer of thanks is said. After the prayer is said we go around the circle and each person says something they are thankful for, it can be anything they are thankful for such as their wonderful family, winning their ball game, or being healthy. After everyone has their chance to say what they are thanful for we line up, get our plates and serve ourselves to the delicious Thanksgiving meal that has been prepared. Everyone sits down, talks and enjoys eachothers company.

Thanksgiving really is a wonderful holiday and a great celebration to give thanks.

* Everyone in my family makes a homemade dessert. It sounds crazy, I know, and we end up with literally a pie per person. My brother almost always makes a sour cream apple pie and I usually bring something decadent and chocolate.

My mother cheats and makes two pies-one pumpkin and one pecan–and my dad usually contributes something fruity. After we’ve stuffed ourselves, we each go home with the leftovers from something we didn’t make. Every year we say we are not going to make so many desserts next time, but then November rolls around again and the tradition continues.

* My family and I love the fall season and especially Thanksgiving. Our “celebrating” starts right after Halloween when I order a fresh turkey from our local butcher with the cook it yourself trimmings. We get enough so we have lots of leftovers for the next day. The day before Thanksgiving, my husband and son go to pick up the turkey and to go shopping for whatever else we need. Food is king on this day! On Thanksgiving day we watch the Macy’s Parade and deep fry the turkey (takes less than a half hour) outside.
We have invited our close family and friends and tell them to bring another turkey so we can deep fry it for them to take home for their own leftovers.

It is a hectic day, but when it is all done, we sit by the fireplace and savor a tradition that is wonderful in our family. We have eaten out on a few occasions, but it is just not the same - and no leftovers!

* Thanksgiving tradition has changed a little for me. It use to be just a day to watch football with little celebration. Now it consists of a bit more work and eating. I go to my girlfriend’s house to eat usually around 5. Of course, I try to watch as much football as possible as it is probably my only true desire to do on Thanksgiving. She tries to get me to help cook, but that is not for me. We all eat dinner together. I am special because I don’t eat turkey, so her mom always has to make me a steak. We usually have a toast to something before eating. Once dinner is over and things are cleaned up, the night has just begun for me. I try to sneak in some more football before heading off to my mom’s house. It is crazy, but I usually eat something there as well. Not a full dinner, like before, but maybe a snack and dessert as they eat their Thanksgiving meal. Of course, still sneaking in the football games. When I was younger, we would usually include our own football game, but those days are over. After exploding with food, it is a hard drive home not falling asleep. Once I get home, it is straight to bed because our newest tradition is going out early to shop on Black Friday. Not my idea. My girlfriend has added preparing for that to her after Thanksgiving dinner tradition.
