Kids Decorate: Simple, Fun Decorating Projects to do with Kids

Kids love to be creative, so including them in some simple decorating projects can be fun for both you and your child. One of the best places to plan kids’ decorating projects is their bedrooms. This is an area where they can express their creativity and enjoy the decorating projects that they help to create. Let’s look at some great projects for kids of all ages.

Fun Kids Décor Project #1: Finger Painting

Even toddlers enjoy having a hand in decorating. One activity that little children love to participate in is finger painting. You can take this one step further and have them help hand-decorate curtain toppers for their room. To do this craft, you’ll want to have plenty of space in a room that is easy to clean up afterwards. Protect the table work space with plastic or an old vinyl tablecloth. Using some plain white or light colored curtain toppers, lay them out on the table. Spread a small amount of kid-safe fabric paints in various colors in throw-away containers, such as aluminum pie pans. Kids can place their hands in the paint, and then decorate the curtain topper with their hand prints. Let the curtains dry, and follow paint instructions to set the paint so that the curtains are washable. In addition, a variation on the handprint theme could be used to make a cute border around the room. Using colorful latex wall paint instead of fabric paint, mark out a strip around the room, at about chair rail height. Mask the area with paper and tape, and then let the kids stamp a border around the room with their hand prints.

Fun Kids Décor Project #2: Decoupage

Another fun decorating project to do with kids is decoupage. You’ll need an old piece of furniture, such as an old wooden chair, toy box or chest. Let the kids select a variety of images, which can include family photos, pictures from magazines, or cartoon characters selected from books. You can make color copies of the photographs if you want to keep the originals. Let the kids decide how they want them arranged on the piece of furniture. You can put a piece of paper down on top of the surface, to make this easier. Once they are arranged, remove the paper and the photos. You can then apply the decoupage to the furniture and re-arrange the photos onto the decoupage. Let dry, and reapply the decoupage according to directions. When finished, you’ll have a fun piece of furniture that your kids helped to decorate.

Fun Kids Decor Project #3: Crafts from a Kit

Kids that are a little older may be ready to take on some craft projects on their own. Good options include a latch hook rug kit or a painted wall mural. Latch hook rugs are easy for kids to make. You can either buy a kit at the store, or let the child draw their own design on a piece of rug canvas. Wall murals can be a lot of fun for kids to paint, especially since they probably have never had such a large canvas to paint on. The great thing about paint is that when they outgrow or get tired of the wall painting, you can paint over it again.
