Dramatic Holiday Makeovers using Slipcovers

In addition to your other holiday decorations, you can give your furniture a fresh look for the holidays as well. Fortunately, it’s not necessary to purchase all new furniture to achieve this look. Instead, you can rely on slipcovers to give your furniture a brand new look for the holidays.

Creating a Cozy Color Scheme

During the cold winter months, and especially during the holiday season, warm and cozy colors are especially appropriate within the home. Even if your furniture is a lighter or more neutral shade, it can be a nice change of pace to go with a darker shade, perhaps in a rich burgundy or pine green, during the winter months and holiday season. In fact, you might want to select a heavier fabric that gives a cozy appearance, such as corduroy, chenille or even velvet. Although you might not find these types of fabrics appealing year-round, they can really make your home seem warmer and more inviting during the holidays, when the weather is cold. It can really be a lot of fun to decorate your living room in a new color scheme for the holidays, and slipcovers are a relatively inexpensive way of allowing you to do that.

Mix and Match with Slipcovers

One nice technique when using slipcovers as part of your holiday decor is to remember that not everything has to match. You can create a beautiful holiday color scheme by using a plaid or patterned slipcover on one piece of furniture, and then pick up those colors and use those as the inspiration for other solid colored slipcovers within the same room. This can be a nice way of using a pattern, without overpowering the entire room by repeating it on all of the furniture pieces.

Special Holiday Slipcovers

Although it might be difficult to find actual holiday slipcovers, if you are handy with a sewing machine, you could use an existing slipcover that fits your furniture as a pattern to make a slipcover out of a holiday print fabric. This can be a fun technique to use on an accent piece of furniture within the room. When selecting your fabric, choose a sturdy and durable type that is appropriate for furniture upholstery. Of course, since the slipcover will only be used during the holiday season, it doesn’t have to be as durable as what you would choose for year-round use.

Accenting Your Furniture with Throws

You can add a little more holiday style to your furniture by selecting furniture slipcovers in rich solid colors such as burgundy and pine green, and then purchasing holiday motif comforters, blankets and throws designed with coordinated colors. Not only will these blankets and throws add a lot of style to the room, but they will also be great for getting cozy on the sofa during the holidays and cold winter months. The look of a comforter, blanket or throw draped across a sofa or chair can adds a warm and homey touch to a room.
