Bedroom Decorating: Designing a Space that Will Grow with Your Child
Children’s bedrooms decorated with character themes are cute, but they are not bedrooms that will grow with the child. A character that is popular this year will likely go by the wayside next year, and replacing character bedding, window treatments, and other themed bedroom furnishings and decor can be quite expensive. Instead of decorating in a character theme that could become outdated or boring within a matter of months, considering the following ways to decorate a bedroom that will grow and change as your child grows.
Add Color
When decorating a child’s bedroom it should include favorite colors, and adding one or more colors to accent the room is one of the easiest ways to begin decorating. Include your child when deciding on bedroom colors, and even if you would rather not paint or paper walls in bright or bold colors, include those colors in accent pieces. After deciding on accent colors, look for ways to add those colors to existing bedroom decor. Add colorful knobs to bedroom furniture, and look for wood accent pieces that could use a little color when decorating. Even a bedroom painted white can be enhanced with bursts of color that kids will absolutely love.
Bedding Ideas
Instead of choosing character bedding that will surely go out of style when deciding on a decorating scheme for the bedroom, choose a complete ensemble in a solid color. When decorating with bedding in colors your child loves, more than likely the bedding will wear out before it becomes dated. Best of all, plain bedding sets generally cost far less than name brand character bedding, and it will grow as your child grows.
Decorating with Throw Pillows
Decorating a bed with an array of throw pillows can make it look completely different and more inviting than ever. While your child is small, invest in a few character pillows when decorating the bedroom. They are very easy to make, and they are far less expensive than character bedding. As your child grows, replace character pillows with throw pillows of various sizes, textures, and colors that match bedding and room decor. The bed will look and feel luxurious, and as throw pillows change they too will grow with your child.
Bedroom Storage Boxes
Containers to store toys and other odds and ends are a must in a child’s bedroom, and they can become part of the decorating scheme. Storage boxes can be painted or papered in accent hues that will help add color and vibrancy to the bedroom. Store them at heights the child can reach and as he or she grows, the storage boxes will be just as useful as ever. In addition, storage boxes are far safer than top-heavy freestanding shelving, and they can be repainted or repapered according to the child’s changing decorating preferences.
Decorating the Bedroom with Wall Border
If you are not a fan of decorating with wallpaper but want to add a bit of interest and design to the bedroom, consider decorating with peel and stick border. Border with adhesive backing is a little more expensive than standard pre-pasted border, but it is easy to put up and easy to remove once the child outgrows the theme. All it takes is a little measuring and cutting to achieve the proper fit and the look you want when decorating with this type of border. Best of all, this is a way to provide your child with the character accents they want without going to a lot of trouble or expense.
Your child will grow up before you know it, but with careful planning and smart decorating schemes, his or her bedroom will not require drastic or costly updates. Give your child the bedroom of their dreams, but choose wisely. It is possible to begin decorating with age-appropriate decor and a design a comfortable and appealing bedroom that will grow with your child.
