Let’s face it – a cluttered and disorganized home can be a stressful place to live. Clutter can start in many ways, but once it because a problem it can make your home life miserable. In this article you’ll learn core fundamentals of how to declutter and staying organized, and you can do this at your own pace. Best of all your home will look beautiful when you are done! Here are 4 core fundamental tips to reducing clutter and staying organized for the rest of your life: 1. Mindset: you need to make a commitment to yourself that from this day forward you will no longer live a cluttered lifestyle — and you will do what it takes to get rid of the clutter and stay organized. 2. Evaluation: you need to learn how to quickly and unemotionally determine what you need in your house vs what you want in your house. Here’s a hard truth for you: most of the clutter in your home is really things you want but don’t really need. If you want make your home beautiful again you’ll need to either toss or donate many of these items. This is not an easy skill to learn so don’t feel bad if it seems “harsh”, but it is something you are going to have to overcome. 3. Storage Systems: in order to stay organized once you get rid of the clutter you need effective storage systems in place. By “storage systems” I mean everything has a place it should get stored. Here’s a great example: we want your home to be organized like your silverware drawer. Notice in when you open it you know exactly where the spoons, knives, and forks go? There’s no question in your mind where the items in the drawer should go. You need to model the rest of your home after the silverware drawer. This might mean buying extra storage bins, shelves, closet organizers, using shoe boxes, or whatever you need to group like items (that you need) and store them efficiently so you know exactly where they are and where to return them when done. 4. Game Plan: the clutter didn’t happen overnight, and a truly cluttered house will take some time to get back in order. My suggestion is write down in order the rooms and areas of your home that stress you out the most to least. Then start with the room that stresses you the most. For many this will be the kitchen, bathroom or bedroom as you use them every day and simply can’t avoid the clutter nor can you live with it. Then once you’ve chosen the room to start with you need to pick an area to start with and work on just that area until you are 100% done before moving onto the next area. This way you don’t get overwhelmed, your entire house isn’t turned upside down, and you’ll quickly feel the satisfaction of having an organized area of your home. My favorite place to tell people to start the declutter process is their kitchen freezer as generally there is nothing emotional about the contents of a freezer. Pull everything out of the freezer, throw out (or cook) all of the freezer burnt food, give the freezer a good wipe down, and then in an organized manner put the remaining food back in. Make sure to group similar items together: veggies in once spot, meat in another, prepared meals in another. This way you know where everthing is stored in the freezer and can quickly determine if you do or don’t need more of something. Hey – you’re officially on your way to a neat, clean, organized, relaxing, and stress free home!
