How To Avoid Home Decorating Mistakes

Over the years, it’s easy to collect mismatched furniture and over time, it can look negative, overcrowded, and stressful. There are several things you can do to make the room pleasing and relaxing by avoiding some of the most common mistakes in home decorating. Here are a few things you should avoid.

Mistake #1:

Don’t buy or accept furniture that doesn’t match your look. Many times, we give in to family pressure and bring in old furniture that someone doesn’t want but we don’t want to see it go to the dump. You need to speak up and say “no” if it doesn’t match your current look and you cannot see changing the look anytime soon.

You do need to buy furniture that matches. You can buy one piece at a time or piece it together as you go but make sure that it matches. Measure your space first and then go shopping or shop online to make sure that you get the right look.

Mistake #2:

Don’t use too many designs, patterns, and prints. It’s easy to collect things over the years that looks great at the time but when you bring them all together in one room, you will find that they do not look as good as you thought they would. You don’t have to throw them all out but you can’t use them all up in one room.

You can focus on one pattern, one color, or one print. Use the colors that make up the one you decide on and accessorize with those colors. Accessorize with your curtains, area rugs, and throw pillows and table spreads.

Mistake #3:

Don’t use different colored area rugs in one room. The multi-color rugs are more affordable but they can cause chaos to the eyes when you are trying to find a relaxing look for your room.

Instead of choose different colors focus on one color. You can choose beige, cream, black, or grey area rugs. The rugs should compliment the look that you want and not take over. You want a rug that is soft to the feet and beautiful to look at.

Mistake #4:

It may look great in mansions but if you have a smaller area, don’t put your furniture against the wall. It doesn’t make the room look bigger, it just looks like you have more floor space.

Instead, put the furniture in sections of the room. The furniture looks great if you section it off. For example, in the living room you may want to put the couch facing two sitting chairs. Place the furniture on a big area rug to distinguish the area. Place a table behind the couch.

Mistake #5:

Everyone has their favorite collectibles that they want to keep don’t display everything at one time. When you collect something, you usually have an over-abundance of it and if you display it all at once then you may end up with a cluttered look that is very displeasing to the eyes.

Instead, display a portion of your collectibles and keep the others in a chest or box. Every season, you can place new collectibles out and put the ones on display in a box until the next time. Constantly changing the collectibles will give your room a different look.
