Do you ever take a look at your children’s closets and wonder how in the world they got so many clothes? If you are like most moms, the never ending laundry pile and clothes closet mess can quickly take its toll. Thankfully, there are some quick and easy ways to keep your tots closets organized and tidy.
Divide and Conquer
The first step to organizing the closets is to take out what no longer fits. Those pants that now reach your daughter’s mid-calf? Put them in a donate pile and give them to charity or make some extra money and sell them at a children’s consignment sale. Anything torn, stained, or no longer wearable needs to be thrown away before any organizing can begin. It is also a good idea to make a separate pile for clothes of each season. Summer shorts can be boxed away in the winter, while heavy sweatpants can be boxed up until the late fall. By getting rid of the items that are not being worn right now, you have more room for the clothes that are being worn. If you do not have a lot of room for storage bins, consider under the bed storage containers or even zippered blanket bags that can hold the clothes you do not need for the current season.
Hang and Organize
After everything has been sorted, hang everything that needs to be hung on plastic hangers that are easy to move across the closet bar and will not pinch little fingers. You may even want to put a hanging bar at your child’s height, so that she can get herself dressed and help put things away when the laundry is done. Organize the clothes by type or by color or both. Pants should be with pants, skirts with skirts, and fancy dresses with fancy dresses. The more organized the clothes are, the easier it is to maintain it, because everything has a place.
Fold and Label
For those items that do not need to be hung up, fold them neatly and place them in a dresser or on a shelf. Another option is to have a cube shelving unit inside the closet to hold t-shirts, sweatshirts, play clothes, and more. Label what goes on each shelf or in each drawer with a colorful label, so that everyone knows what goes where. This is especially helpful if Dad is helping to put things away, as he will know exactly how you have the closet organized based on the labels.
Organizing the kids’ closets does not have to be a never-ending project, but it does need to be an area where you are vigilant about keeping things in their place. Once you have it organized and your children see how neat the closet it, not to mention how easy it is to find their favorite clothes, it will be a lot easier to maintain. With everyone helping out and being responsible for keeping it clean, you might even have success keeping it clean through the teenage years.
