No Money for a Vacation? Have a Staycation!

Budgets are stretched tight these days. Things we used to take for granted have become luxuries. The Family Vacation does not have to be a casualty of our economy! If you can’t get away, have a Staycation. Sleep at home but do fun things with your family. Family vacations are more about relationships than about anything else! Remember: No work!  No business calls! No housework! You and your spouse and your kids! Here are some places to look in your area for fun and inexpensive entertainment:

Playgrounds and local parks-Take a picnic lunch and spend the day at a local playground or park. Civic playgrounds have bigger equipment than most of us do at home. The swings swing higher! The slides go faster! The jungle gym is twistier! And all made more fun because Mom and Dad are there to play, without having to worry about housework or homework.

State and National Parks-Many have minimal fees but lots of amenities. You can fish or hike. You can learn about the history or geology of your area through their park system. Some have playgrounds or camping facilities.

Museums-Use your internet to locate museums in your area. Within a 30 minute radius of our home, there is a Gold Mining museum, a Rock and Mineral museum, a Cowboy museum, not to mention 4 city and 2 county museums. An hour away is a large city with an Art museum.

Dance and Theater-Plan ahead and look for bargains at local theaters or dance companies. Community theater is inexpensive and wonderfully entertaining!

Lake or River-Maybe there is a nearby lake with beach access or a community swimming pool for cool, wet entertainment. Maybe you can tube down your local river. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Backyard Camping-Pitch a tent, dig a fire pit, and camp out under the stars in your own backyard. Roast hotdogs and marshmallows. Tell spooky ghost stories! Reminisce about the good old days! Share stories of your childhood camp-outs.

Have fun on your next summer vacation, whether away or at home. After all, the most important thing about any vacation is that the family is together! Connections are reinforced, adventures are shared, memories are made!
