How Can Video Games Help Your Kids?

Like it or not, video games aren’t going anywhere. As technology has taken on a more prominent role in our lives, video games have come right along with it. Not only are video game consoles popular, but they’re now being found on just about every portable electronic device, including smart phones.

Parents understandably have their reservations about video games, and like anything else they can have their drawbacks, especially when consumed in too large of quantities. But despite some public perceptions, video games aren’t all bad. In fact, today’s video games can deliver some valuable services to kids. Here are some reasons not to worry about your child’s video games habits.

Educational benefits

Maybe video games aren’t as intellectually satisfying as geometry, but some can still offer some mental stimulation. Many video games promote problem solving through the various puzzles and challenges posed in the games. Some video games can also encourage letter recognition and early reading, which can be useful to young children starting their school education.

Teamwork skills

Many video games now feature multiplayer capabilities, which let players divide up into teams to compete against one another. Winning the game requires strong teamwork and strategy development, which players learn on the fly as they figure out how to succeed.

Multitasking

Video games rarely demand just one thing from players. They require attention on several aspects of gameplay, such as navigation, problem solving, strategy and other objectives. Playing video games at an early age will help players learn how to multitask and handle multiple obligations at once.

Social skills

By encouraging play with other people, kids can learn how to interact with one another, make friendships and hone their social skills. While this occurs in a venue that older generations might not understand, the skills acquired are no less beneficial to their futures.

Tech savvy

Today’s video games are fairly complex compared to their predecessors. Developing a fluency in technology can help children as they grow up in a tech-dominated world. The familiarity with this technology will ease anxieties about various tech devices and give them a leg up in the future.

Confidence development

It’s not about the ability to win at video games, but rather the personal confidence derived from conquering a game, solving problems and overcoming challenges set in front of you. Kids will feel good about themselves and their confidence will increase, which is a valuable asset all throughout life.

Exercise

Maybe older versions of video games encouraged stagnancy, but today’s gamer is much more active. Both the Nintendo Wii and XBOX 360 have developed features and games that get users up and active while still receiving the stimulation of a video game. This activity will be instrumental in combating child obesity and other risk factors that face today’s youth.

When considering the negative stigmas attached to video games, it’s worth remembering that these attitudes were developed years into the past, long before this current generation of games and platforms was released. That’s not to say that kids should be allowed to play video games as much as they want, but this form of entertainment certainly has its benefits. Parents would be wise to recognize the value of controlled video game play in the development of their children and their futures.
