How do You Make Thanksgiving Special for Your Family?
A couple of hours ago I posted some of the ways Busy Moms Online readers spend their Thanksgiving day, and promised more. Enjoy!
Lot of Thanksgiving decorations, Turkey w pumpkin pie!| US $3.99 (1 Bid) End Date: Thursday Dec-04-2008 7:38:15 PST Bid now | Add to watch list |
* My husband’s family is Italian, and every year we have a big Thanksgiving dinner at an aunt’s house. Several aunts and uncles, cousins, grandchildren, and grandparents get together and the food is always fantastic! One of our cousins is a chef, and we put his talents to good use. The food is typical Thanksgiving fare, with one notable exception. The first course of Thanksgiving dinner is always escarole soup. This soup seems to have become popular lately, since canned versions called “Italian wedding soup” have hit the grocery stores. My husband’s grandmother makes a huge pot of it from scratch each year, and we always look forward to this tasty part of the meal. Escarole soup has a chicken broth base, tiny meatballs, shredded chicken, escarole, carrots, onions, seasonings, and orzo pasta. We serve it with fresh grated Parmesan cheese and warm bread. It’s hard to only eat one bowl, but we all try to pace ourselves so we have room for the big dinner and several dessert options! So, while soup may not seem like an exciting tradition, Thanksgiving is the only time of year my grandmother-in-law makes it and we all look forward to it. It’s something my husband’s family has done for as long as any of them can remember, and a nice way to include their Italian traditions into a favorite American holiday.

* My Thanksgiving family celebration always includes some of the best holiday treats such as sweet potato pie, pecan pie, date nut balls, and all of the rest. We all enjoy desserts so we tend to have a lot more than we could ever eat just to have enough to last us for awhile. Probably the favorite of us all is date nut balls because they require a lot of labor to create, so we all mix up a batch and all join in the rolling and shaping of the balls in coconut, it is a great holiday tradition. In most cases one batch is not enough, probably because of all the taste tests, so we will have to do it multiple times, which adds to the fun!

* A Thanksgiving tradition that my family has done for years is inviting at least one person from the community that had nowhere else to go for the holidays. We make it our mission to keep an eye out for someone that needs a place for a nice, family Thanksgiving dinner and then we invite them. Some years, there have been more of these people than there have been family members and yet it seems to always be a very fun day. When the person arrives, we put them right to work alongside the family or send them to watch football with the family members that should not be allowed in the kitchen whichever choice suits them. The main thing is that they are not alone and that we are better for having spent the time with such wonderful people.

* A Thanksgiving tradition that we have had for many years is that we all get together for Thanksgiving dinner. After we have had our dinner, we all go outside and play football and have the best time. When it starts to get dark we go back inside and draw our names for Christmas. We have such a large family that instead of buying everyone presents we buy for the persons name that we draw. FUN! After we finish that we play board games and other games until everyone is so tired they have to pass out. We always have a great Thanksgiving Day holiday.
Wii Fit (Wii) with Balance Board and 40+ Games| US $127.50 (23 Bids) End Date: Wednesday Dec-03-2008 16:50:44 PST Bid now | Add to watch list |
* Every Thanksgiving my family makes a “what we are thankful for” tree. Each person that will be present at the thanksgiving meal that day contributes.
Start with a bunch of pieces of paper and pens. Each person in the family then writes the three things they are most thankful for and then they are saved for dinner time. As dinner is eaten, each person reads their list.
This leads to many stories, shared memories, laughs and leads the conversation to last hours after dinner is done. We have even had guests that have taken this tradition home with them and continued it on with their own families.
* We have a huge group for Thanksgiving every year with 30-50 guest, including many children. While the moms are gossiping around the cheese plates and the dads are watching football, all the kids are hard at work in one of the bedrooms or the playroom. The older ones write, cast, direct, and choreograph a show that we all look forward to seeing after dessert.
Thanksgiving Traditions: How do You Celebrate?
I recently asked you, my readers how YOU celebrate Thanksgiving, and got a great response. Here is some inspirations from others like you.

* My absolute favorite Thanksgiving tradition has been going on for years. I believe it is such a wonderful Thanksgiving tradition that I will be sure to pass on to my children. Each year my family gathers at my grandparents house for Thanksgiving dinner. It is a potluck type dinner where everyone contributes something, whether it be a main dish or a dessert. Before dinner we gather around the table hold hands and a prayer of thanks is said. After the prayer is said we go around the circle and each person says something they are thankful for, it can be anything they are thankful for such as their wonderful family, winning their ball game, or being healthy. After everyone has their chance to say what they are thanful for we line up, get our plates and serve ourselves to the delicious Thanksgiving meal that has been prepared. Everyone sits down, talks and enjoys eachothers company.
Thanksgiving really is a wonderful holiday and a great celebration to give thanks.

* Everyone in my family makes a homemade dessert. It sounds crazy, I know, and we end up with literally a pie per person. My brother almost always makes a sour cream apple pie and I usually bring something decadent and chocolate.
My mother cheats and makes two pies-one pumpkin and one pecan–and my dad usually contributes something fruity. After we’ve stuffed ourselves, we each go home with the leftovers from something we didn’t make. Every year we say we are not going to make so many desserts next time, but then November rolls around again and the tradition continues.

* My family and I love the fall season and especially Thanksgiving. Our “celebrating” starts right after Halloween when I order a fresh turkey from our local butcher with the cook it yourself trimmings. We get enough so we have lots of leftovers for the next day. The day before Thanksgiving, my husband and son go to pick up the turkey and to go shopping for whatever else we need. Food is king on this day! On Thanksgiving day we watch the Macy’s Parade and deep fry the turkey (takes less than a half hour) outside.
We have invited our close family and friends and tell them to bring another turkey so we can deep fry it for them to take home for their own leftovers.
It is a hectic day, but when it is all done, we sit by the fireplace and savor a tradition that is wonderful in our family. We have eaten out on a few occasions, but it is just not the same - and no leftovers!

* Thanksgiving tradition has changed a little for me. It use to be just a day to watch football with little celebration. Now it consists of a bit more work and eating. I go to my girlfriend’s house to eat usually around 5. Of course, I try to watch as much football as possible as it is probably my only true desire to do on Thanksgiving. She tries to get me to help cook, but that is not for me. We all eat dinner together. I am special because I don’t eat turkey, so her mom always has to make me a steak. We usually have a toast to something before eating. Once dinner is over and things are cleaned up, the night has just begun for me. I try to sneak in some more football before heading off to my mom’s house. It is crazy, but I usually eat something there as well. Not a full dinner, like before, but maybe a snack and dessert as they eat their Thanksgiving meal. Of course, still sneaking in the football games. When I was younger, we would usually include our own football game, but those days are over. After exploding with food, it is a hard drive home not falling asleep. Once I get home, it is straight to bed because our newest tradition is going out early to shop on Black Friday. Not my idea. My girlfriend has added preparing for that to her after Thanksgiving dinner tradition.
