Celebrating? Choose a Designated Driver
How do you want to get home after the New Year’s Party this year? You can have a few choices: a taxi, a designated driver, or a police car!
By Presidential Proclamation, December of each year is designated National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month.
It is the most popular month for serving alcohol at parties, family gatherings, and social events. That makes December the most dangerous time of the year for alcohol-related traffic accidents and fatalities.
Think about this: An alcohol-related motor vehicle crash kills someone every 31 minutes in the U.S. and nonfatal crashes injure someone every two minutes according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics for 2004. That’s the annual average, but statistics for December show it to be more dangerous than other months.
Most people enjoy holiday drinks, but driving home after a party can be a disaster. You can have your fun and stay safe if you arrange to have a designated driver, someone who will not be drinking and who can safely drive you home after the party.
Your responsibility, however, does not end there. When you see that a person who doesn’t have a designated driver is intoxicated, arrange a ride or drive him home yourself. Friends don’t let friends drive drunk.
The California Office of Traffic Safety reminds you that you have a choice: Decide whether you will be driven home by a designated driver or whether you end up riding home in a patrol car.
How to Make Exercise Fun?
Just thinking about exercise probably makes you shudder. Let’s be honest - exercising is boring for the most part. But exercising can be fun enjoyable. Try these tips for making exercise fun:
1. Plug in your . Grab your favorite CD before you head to the gym or go for a walk. Listening to music or audio books will make the time fly by. Before you realize it, you will have exercised for an hour.
2. Enlist an exercise buddy. Studies have shown that people who exercise alone usually do not keep their exercise routine. Ask a friend to join you in exercising. Create a plan that will work for both of you. Exercising is so much easier and fun when you have a buddy to chat with while you sweat.
3. KISS (Keep It Simple, Sweetie). If you are starting a new exercise schedule, don’t get fancy with it. Start out with a simple routine you know you will be able to follow. Walking and step aerobics are two really easy and simple exercises you might consider.
4. Get silly. Whatever you do, don’t let exercising become boring. If you do, you’ll never stick to it. Get silly with it. If you’re walking, listen to music with a faster tempo to put some pep in your step. Add a little dance to steps. Just don’t let it get boring!
5. Be nice to yourself. The best way to make exercise fun is to reward yourself for a job well done. Set a goal. When you reach that goal, reward yourself. If you have to, bribe yourself. Make a goal to walk thirty minutes per day, three days a week for one full month. Promise yourself that new you’ve been dying for, but only if you meet your goal.

Holiday scrapbook preserves your memories
Every is unique. Some are specifically for school events, others for vacations, and many are a family history. They preserve the cherished memories of children growing up and of holiday celebrations.
The most important thing is that the stories of the lives illustrated in the book are not lost.
Parents often feel pressured to be creative or artistic with scrapbook pages, but the simple design that gets the job done always beats the fancy one that is left unfinished. It will be a gift to your children as they look back on their growing-up experiences. Here are some other tips from suppliers of scrapbook materials.
- Save original art and stories. Don’t save pages and worksheets.
- Reduce the size of artwork. Make a color copy or scan them into smaller versions, preferably on acid-free paper.
- If your child has made many Christmas drawings, tape them to the refrigerator and take a photo of the collection. Keep that in the album.
- For the holidays, take plenty of photos and include the best, most colorful ones.
- Make a title page in an album with small school pictures from each year. It will let you see how kids changed from one year to another.
- Don’t wait too long. Make scrap book pages as events occur rather than waiting until the end of a year.
- Include party napkins, flattened gift bows, ticket stubs, and other mementos.
