Movie Crafts for Kids

When our kids find a movie that they love, they like to watch it over and over again. Sometimes tearing them away from the TV screen seems like a lost cause, even though they have already watched the same thing dozens of times. Is there any hope?

You’ve heard the expression “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” That doesn’t mean you have to subject yourself to the dreaded movie yet again, though. If you can find a way to incorporate their beloved film masterpiece into a craft, it won’t be so hard to get them to stop watching it and do something constructive. Here are some crafts that you can do together:

  • Make clay figurines of your child’s favorite characters from the movie. Simply get some clay, model them, let them dry, and paint with acrylic paints. If you don’t have any clay handy, use Play-Doh. It works nicely as well, and your child won’t have to paint it.
  • Create scrapbook pages based on the movie. Have your child cut pictures of characters and scenes out of magazines, coloring books, and anywhere else she can find them. Arrange them on card stock, add stickers and other embellishments, and have your child do some journaling about her favorite things about the movie to add to the page. When it’s done, add it to a scrapbook or frame it and place it on your child’s bedroom wall.
  • If your child has dolls or action figures of the movie’s characters, maybe she would enjoy making a backdrop of a favorite scene for them. A large boot box works well for this project. She can either draw directly in the bottom of it, or cut card stock to size and glue it in there. You may have to glue two pieces together to get it to fit just right. She can use crayons or markers to draw the scene, and add stickers or gems. She might even want to make trees and other props out of clay or Play-Doh. When she’s not playing with it, the boot box can double as storage for her dolls.
  • Make clothing that features favorite characters. Your child can use fabric paint to do freehand artwork pertaining to the movie, or you can find iron-on patterns that he can use paint to color in. You might also be able to find buttons and other embellishments that you can add to the piece. Older kids might enjoy learning how to sew using fabric that features the movie logo or characters.

Kids can really get wrapped up in their favorite movies. But when given the opportunity to create something related to them, they often enjoy doing so. These movie craft ideas can help you get your child off the couch and get creative.

Why Is It Important for Children to Clean Their Own Room?

Its a common complaint of children all over the country. They cry and whine when mom and dad ask them to clean up their rooms. Why, Mom? I like it the way it is. Why is it important for children to clean their own room? Here are some reasons why:

  • Knowing how to clean their room teaches responsibility. Hopefully they will learn to care more about things they have.
  • Teaching children to clean their room also helps prepare them for the future. At some point in time they will leave home and go out on their own. They need to learn how to clean a whole house before that happens.
  • Children need to realize that, as a part of the family, everyone has to pitch in and help. They will also have to help out in the rest of the house, but they are ultimately responsible for keeping their own room clean and organized.
  • Having a clean room with everything in a home of its own will help keep your children from stepping on toys and breaking them. This helps them keep their toys in good condition so they can be passed along in the future.
  • Maintaining a clean room also makes it easier for your children to find things that they either want or need. If your child’s room is messy, they wont be able to find the toys they want to play with or the school permission slip on the day its due.

Cell Phones and School

Teenagers and cell phones seem to be inseparable these days. You go to the mall and see teens either talking on the phone or text messaging each other. Cell phones and school may not be a good combination, however. Controversy abounds over the topic; here are some pros and cons about allowing cell phones in schools.

Despite what some opponents to allowing students to have cell phones during school hours think, there are some pros to the practice:

* Parents like being able to contact their children during the school day in case of an emergency or a change of plans. With the number of school shootings in the past ten years or so, parents may feel more comfortable if their child has their cell phone.

* Students can contact their parents if bad weather will cause the schools to let out early, or for other reasons not related to any danger whatsoever.

* A teen having a cell phone helps parents know their whereabouts. Parents can also let the student know if they’re going to be late.

* Its much more convenient to call one another rather than having to try to reach the school office and get them to pass along a message to your student.

* Cell phones can be turned off or silenced so they dont interrupt class. Schools may set aside certain places where cell phones are allowed to be used if they so choose.

Unfortunately, for as many good reasons there are to allow cell phone use in schools, there are also cons to the practice:

* With text messaging capabilities, students could use their cell phone to cheat by giving one another answers to tests.

* Cell phones can be used to spread misinformation. If there is an emergency at the school, students may not pass along correct information.

* Students have been known to use their cell phone to make prank calls to the school. Some students have even called in bomb threats to the school - which is against the law, by the way.

* If a student forgets to turn off their cell phone during class, the ring tone and text messaging alert will disrupt the class and impede learning.

* It still has not been proven that using a cell phone is safe. There are some opponents that still insist that cell phone usage causes brain cancer. Do we want our children to be using them when their brains are still forming?

You and your child will have to determine how you feel about cell phones in school. Should your child be allowed to carry one to school? If so, for what reason should they be used? What will the consequences be if theyre caught using them outside of the reasons youve decided upon? These questions and more are ones you may want to think about before deciding whether or not let your child take a cell phone to school.
