President’s Day Crafts

President’s Day is celebrated in the United States on the third Monday in February. Although the holiday was designated to remember George Washington’s birthday, many in the United States use President’s Day to honor both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, who’s birthday is also in February.

George Washington
As the legend goes, George Washington received a hatchet when he was just six years old.  He loved this hatchet and went around chopping everything around him.  He used his hatchet to bark his father’s prized young english cherry tree and the tree died.  When his father confronted George, he answered he could not tell a lie, he had cut the cherry tree with his hatchet.  This story coined George Washington as an honest person.

For this craft you will need: a piece of white construction paper, pencil, scissors, green crayon, brown crayon, red paint, paper plate and baby wipes

Instructions:

  • Lay child’s arm and hand on white construction paper, fingers closed and trace.
  • Color the hand green and the arm portion brown.
  • Cut out the hand, arm combo.
  • Dip index finger into red paint and add cherries to the tree (as many or few as the child wants).
  • Allow to dry

Abraham Lincoln
The story told is Abraham Lincoln was born into a very poor family.  He was mostly self-educated but became a lawyer, state legislator and United States Representative, however, he failed at two attempts for a seat in the United States Senate.  He later became President of the United States and led the the movement to the freedom of slavery.

For this craft you will need: craft card stock (any color), construction paper for door, window and roof (any colors), craft sticks, penny and glue.  Draw the rectangle template for the door, a square template for the window and a triangle template for the roof.

Instructions:

  • Glue 9 craft sticks on the card stock.
  • Cut out the roof and glue it above the craft sticks.
  • Cut out the door and glue it on the craft sticks (draw a doorknob).
  • Cut out the window and glue it on the craft sticks.
  • Glue the penny on the window.
  • Allow to dry.
